I started my blog in January 2010 before I began student teaching. I had heard that reflecting is a great way to be a better teacher, which I had spent my first 5 years of college planning on becoming. I wanted to share my reflections with the world, so I started the blog ahead of time, something I do with stuff like this (like my website, which I started in 2007 because I decided that when I became a teacher, I would have a class webpage. It’s mostly a place for me to show off my early stories and poems). So at first, I posted my poems from a poetry writing class I was taking.
Then came student teaching in mid-March, which ended up being short lived: I was asked to leave halfway through because there were parts of my teaching that showed I wasn’t ready to be a teacher. No matter what I chose to do, I’d have to delay graduation one more year, meaning I would graduate after 6 years of college instead of 5. I was upset about this for a while: I had spent all 5 years of college focusing in becoming a teacher, and now it might not happen. My mom told a family friend of ours who works at my college about what happened and the friend suggested that I talk with Career Services and take some interest inventories that would tell me what jobs and careers best fit my personality. I did and although teaching came up as one, I was starting to feel like it wasn’t for me personally. So by the day I would have graduated, I changed my major for a second time in my college career: my major had gone from English Teaching (when I started college in 2005) to Elementary Teaching (when I realized teaching high school wasn’t for me) to Writing.
My new major seems to be where I fit in best, even though I still feel that I wasted time, money, and energy on training to be a teacher. My minor had been Creative Writing, so all I have left is the business and media classes, which should be interesting since most are not in the English department. However, I’ve always loved to write and have wanted to be a writer since I was 12, so expanding my writing horizons is something I’m looking forward to.
On June 11, 2011, I will officially, finally, be a college graduate. But until then, I’m blogging about taking advantage of the unexpected blessing that is my sixth year of college. As a shy forever singleton who’s legal but doesn’t drink much alcohol, the most exciting thing that happens to me is a new project, assignment, or grade from my classes. Still, I enjoy being on my own as much as I enjoy being at home around my family. Plus, I love to bake, so if I bake anything other than your basic chocolate chip cookie or snickerdoodle, you’ll see it, like this yummy cheesecake/brownie combo:
